Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are a condition found in a large proportion of the population - especially the elderly - caused when veins become swollen in and outside the rectum. They are considered to be embarrassing and can cause pain and discomfort. Whilst there is no cure for piles, they can be treated. Often, it is as simple as eating more fibre and drinking plenty of water. However, they can become more serious and cause bleeding and itching, in which case a doctor may recommend a more serious treatment.
